Pyrus pyraster - Wild Pear

  • A small, rounded or conical shaped tree or large shrub, native to Central and SE Europe. The Wild Pear is suitable for almost every garden with a sunny spot. It tolerates drought and atmospheric pollution well and can even be grown in a pot in the centre of large cities. Planted out into the ground or not, it will open pure white flowers in April, followed by red or yellow, gooseberry-sized, tasty little fruits (soft and juicy when ripe). It offers a spectacular Autumn coloration when the rounded, shiny leaves turn to the shades of yellow, orange or even red. Well worth a try, fast growing but easy to shape/prune.
