Maclura tricuspidata - Chinese Mulberry

Height

  • Maclura tricuspidata is known for its sweet and tasty edible fruits. The deciduous, small tree is suitable for any garden with it being possible to grow in a large container on the patio. The Chinese Mulberry is slow growing and originates from East Asia. The fruit is somewhat similar to that of the mulberry and the lychee (1-2 inch in diameter). When the fruits are ripe, they are a maroon-red colour with a dark, rich juicy red flesh and have a similar taste to a watermelon when soft (they can be eaten raw or cooked). The Chinese Mulberry is dioecious, but most male plants will bear some fruits, too. However, by planting a few together highly likely ensures both genders for a higher yield. It has small, cream flowers in the Summer and in the Autumn its simple leaves turn a golden yellow.

  • The intended main use of this plant is to grow food for human consumption. We always recommend further research to learn the different ways in which the food source can be prepared and consumed.
