Stenocarpus salignus - Scrub Beefwood, Silky Oak

Description

Stenocarpus salignus is a close relative to the red Firewheel Tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus), but with white delicate flowers instead. Stenocarpus salignus will grow into a lovely little tree or shrub in a pot, although in its wild rainforest habitat in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, it can reach 20m in height. Normally it would prefer a slightly acidic soil, but on the nursery, it grows perfectly well in a normal peat free mix. Ellipsoid, shiny dark green leaves make up a contrasting background against the exquisite Proteaceae flowers with  their 4 tepals and 4 stamens. This particular species displays flowers which are produced in umbels of up to 20 flowers in solitary clusters, yellow to cream / green-white in colour (reminiscent of Lomatia spp.); each flower is about 30mm long and very narrow. The flowers are fragrant too.
It can withstand light frosts and it is possible  to grow them outdoors, against a south facing wall in the milder parts of the UK.

We have one year old, 15-20cm tall, beautiful plants available.
