Liquidambar styraciflua is a large tree but can be kept small with pruning (in a large pot for example) and is also ideal for bonsai. The palmately lobed leaves are bronze in Spring, green in the Summer and turn to a spectacular orange and red late Autumn. The quirky, grenade-like fruits really do catch your eye and remain on the tree until mid Winter giving an additional feature on older trees. The Sweet Gum is easy to grow and quite drought tolerant, perfect for the patio or as a bonsai.
