Pyrus ussuriensis - Manchurian Pear

  • Native to Eastern Russia, probably the hardiest Pyrus species due to it withstanding temperatures as low as -35C.  The smallish tree (4-5m when adult) is covered by pinkish flowers in Spring, fading to white. Its golf ball sized pears mature to brown and are a delicacy for birds and mammals, also edible to humans, especially after the frost "bite" it. It can be grown in a pot.
